I still feel a bit confused as to why Gatsby disappeared just like that. Im sure that it wasn't that he felt shy in front of Tom Buchanan. Was he? Gatsby is a very confident man. He should possess the ability to talk to anyone, even strangers, I think. Anyway, I don't think that he has met Tom before. Yes, I agree that Tom might seem intimidating to certain people, but i think that Gatsby off all people would not be scared of him. There must be another reason. Maybe he felt that Tom was sexually attracted to him? Sometimes Tom has that affect on some people. Also Gastby is gorgeous, everybody loves him, and he is rich. He is the dream man. Yes. That must be it. He must have felt freaked out by Tom. I have to tell Gatsby not to be afraid of Tom. As far as i know, Tom is not a homosexual. He has a wife and a mistress for God's sake. If he actually turned out to be a homosexual that would be shell shocking, and the whole world might just as well come to an end. Tom is so straight he even makes me look gay.
Oh, poor Gatsby. I wonder how he is feeling right now. Im sure that he has enever experienced something like this before. Oh poor, poor Gatsby. And he's such a nice person! He has been really friendly to me ever since I moved to the West Egg. Although Im not so sure about that acquiantance of his. What was his name again?.... the man.....it was...... the man with the humuongous nose...... oh yes, Mr Wolfshiem. What a strange name though. Unfortunately, I dont think any other name would suit him either. I mean, look at the size of that nose! Its large enough to be classified as a planet itself! Oh what in the worl are the Jews getting at? This is sad. Maybe Tom was right. If we white people are not careful, bbig nosed Jews might actually take over the world. Now that's a horrible thought. Maybe I have to go read that book that Tom was talking about that other day. What was the name again? Oh, I can just ask him the next time i go over to Daisy's house, or bump into him. Thinking of big nosed Jews now are sending shivers up my spine. Urgh. How can Gatsby be so friendly with these sort of people? They are going to tarnish his reputation sooner or later. Oh poor poor Gatsby. And he already has so many things to deal with. He should take a vacation lest his brain explodes and we'll be cleaning up what's left of him using a broom and a dustpan.
Im absolutely certain that Gatsbby would not be able to take it. He s a fragile emotional person. He might just break under the pressure of that big nosed Jew!. I have to save him...... unles.....Gatsby actually did and enjoyed doing those kind of things. Oh no, Gatsby, a bootlegger? Oh, what is that huge hairy nosed Jew doing to my poor poor Gatsby? I never expected Gatsby to deal in these kinds of businesses. I thought those people were just gossipers with nothing better else to do. I though those were empty rumours. Don't tell me I have been associating myself with a criminal? Oh, I might get influenced by the likes of Mr Wolfshiem through Gatsby? That huge hairy nosed Jew is going down! I might actually be becoming a bootlegger myself! Going against the law?! No, this wont do. Not at all. Doesn't Gatsby know the effect the emotional trauma of getting sent to jail will affect him? Although if I can get rich like Gatsby did, that would be fine. Very fine indeed.I could get any girl I want. And all the girls would want me too. Everyone would know my name. Maybe even Tom would be jealous of me. What a wonderful world that will be.
i liked the first para (was funny) but i don't think the ideas and words fit Nick very much, the repeated uses of "oh" also seem a little too feminine
ReplyDeletethe racism was shown well
I have that very strange feeling that Michelle just randomly wrote and posted the whole thing? xD
ReplyDeleteThe response is very personal indeed, which is good, I guess.
I approve how you emphasised Nick's racism, though I don't agree that Nick himself admits he's a racist. Think he would discuss Wolfsheim, but without considering his hatred as something related to anti-semism.
Yeah... I guess it needs more depth into Nick's realisation of Gatsby's true profession and stuffs, and also more serious discussion of eastern business... and all that...
And the voice is pretty much Michelle-ish, not Carraway-ish...
And even if you do think Nick is gay, it doesn't mean everyone else is gay, and it as well doesn't mean that Nick is feminine.
[I liked it though, so funny XD]
So curious what'd mr polli write
Oh,
ReplyDelete+more scenes need to be described, like Tom and Gatsby leaving and stuff
And NY
I myself think that there are things that do not need to be mentioned as they are not important to Nick, but 1) the mark scheme doesn't think so 2) You skipped most of those important ones
Oh, yeah
ReplyDelete...interesting (c)
Hi Michelle!
ReplyDeleteI like how you emphasised the size of Wolfshiem's nose which did show very well Fitzgerald's criticism towards racism.
Your last paragraph also illustrates well Nick's two-facedness when he says "Although if I can get rich like Gatsby did, that would be fine. Very fine indeed.I could get any girl I want. And all the girls would want me too. Everyone would know my name. Maybe even Tom would be jealous of me."
If only you could have used some other sophisticated words rather than "oh" and extended the length of the sentences to sound more Nick-ish.
Btw, I don't get this statement "I have to tell Tom not to be afraid of Tom." :(
Oh one more thing, I can't really see Nick's controversial thoughts towards Gatsby's personality and life.
ReplyDelete"I have to tell Tom not to be afraid of Tom."
ReplyDeleteJust shows Tom or Nick being mental, really...
/I guess she wanted to tell Gatsby not to be afraid
i think Nick could admit his racism a bit because it's his diary entry and it's supposed to be private
ReplyDelete@ Liza: Haha... That sentence doesn't really make sense, does it? Maybe it's a typo!
ReplyDeleteYeah! I quite agree with Sophia because that is the point Mr.Pollicutt suggested me to do to show Nick's two-facedness.
Sophia, I warned you... xD
ReplyDeleteNick, however, is a very arrogant person; and also remember how he disapproved (silently) Tom's speech about whites?
Nick knows that being racist is being bad, and he also thinks that he has more moral qualities than other people, which means he considers himself very friendly to everyone, even if someone's a Jew (or even worse =ะช)
So I don't think he'll actually admit he's racist. He most probably will mention his attitude towards Jews, nut without approving the straightforwardness Tom has
And even if it's private, he still wouldn't say that he's bad, because he personally doesn't think so
ReplyDeleteYeah you're true in some way however, I still think as Nick expresses his real feelings through this entry, his true colour just automatically or we may say accidentally reveals without him telling us DIRECTLY!
ReplyDeletei said admit A BIT
ReplyDeleteand he'd mention something about the whites being better but to him it won't be bad because the recent World War has most people thinking worse about Jews than they would have before, this way of thinking wouldn't seem as bad to Nick in that time period. So personally he wouldn't disapprove of that thought as much as he would of when Tom said it because it's about a Jew and he's just been shown that Wolfshiem deals with illegal activities
It's most of the people who'd consider Jews as the exiled race, but as we know, Nick thinks
ReplyDelete1) he "inclined to reserve all judgements"
2) his moralistic qualities are higher/better
3) he is honest.
As Nick implies his moral is very strong AND he reserves all judgements,
+ as we know racism IS PART OF being judgemental (judging people by race, not by personality, which makes it even worse; and Nick denies even the fact of judging by personality)
=> Racism contradicts with his ideal of himself being non-judgemental and "good"
=> As he thinks he is good, he won't accept an idea that implies he is not
=> He won't accept the idea of himself being racist
@Uyen, that's what I'm trying to say, but in Michelle's he does talk about his racism directly
ReplyDeletewhy did i agree to an argument D:
ReplyDeletebut the thing is, he uses the book to make US think that he's better than others and if it's a diary entry, he won't need to convince anyone
most of your points are related to what Nick tries to get the readers to believe, when there's no reader he doesn't have to make himself look better
Yeah! I think Sophia is correct because Nick's personality is quite... FAKE I may say! This is a diary entry so nobody would judge upon whatever he says therefore it is a good chance to show what he really thinks, not what he wants us to think about him (honest, better than everyone else etc)
ReplyDeleteBtw, I don't think racism is very very very significant here.
Oh well
ReplyDeleteThe thing is, I think Nick wants us to believe he's good because he himself believs he's good. It's not for us to actually believe /in the book/, it's for us to support his sense of greatness...
somehow like that
It's not really only my guess, it is supported by some scenes, e.g. that scene with the description of NY.
I doubt Nick would want us to believe he's so great without any particular reason
THis is why I think HE THINKS he is great
So he won't accept the 'racism' part
Personally, I think it doesn't really matter what Nick thinks about himself... You're right he might think is like superb and perfect however, his behaviour can always accuse and reflect his true colour.
ReplyDeleteThe flaws in a person just reveals naturally through the ways he writes and expresses his feelings, especially it is a diary entry, nobody reads it! [We read it though! :)) ]
i think that he knows there are flaws in him, he's not an idiot, but when writing the book, he makes others seem beneath him to make himself look better. it's not really a matter of him believing he's the greatest but more of him trying to make himself seem good compared to others.
ReplyDeleteThat's why he makes a point to separate himself by calling people "young clerks" and stuff. He may think he's great but i think he knows his flaws and tries to cover over them like that.
and what Uyen says :)
haha, Uyen's trying to stop us from arguing :]
ReplyDeleteok, truce Liza!
ReplyDeleteLOL... Yeah! I agree with Sophia! Anyway, we should stop here! Give Michelle a break otherwise she will feel very bad seeing these comments! Tee-hee!
ReplyDeleteP/S: I'm a PEACE MAKER! ;) Good Uyen!
I guess we should stop now xD
ReplyDeleteI understand your point Sponge, though I just disagree that Nick would act this way. My point is, he's trying to persuade himself in his ideals of being awesome and all that, which makes him dishonest even to himself.
Your point is then that he is actually honest to himself outside the world Fitzgerald's created
None of those can really be proved since no evidence can be found in the book, it's all just about understanding of people and psychological stuffs, so...
yeah
Let it be a draw then? ^___~

ReplyDeleteI just got home from dinner.
ReplyDelete36 comments, eh?
I will deal with this tomorrow...
umm... ignore the last 13 comments :D
ReplyDeleteSophia...the First World War had nothing to do with Jewish people....
ReplyDeleteTo be honest Michelle, I feel that you are somewhat 'playing to the gallery' here; do you honestly think that expressions such as "He must have felt freaked out by Tom" are attributable to Nick?
Although you have some interesting ideas, your inability (unwillingness?) to find an apt 'voice' for Nick has undone you.
This is firmly in band 2 (B): you need to develop both your sensitivity to character and a more wide ranging investigation of how the passage fits into the novel's wider themes to progress.
And now I'm going to bed.
...i based the War thing on what you said in class...
ReplyDeleteNo, I would not have said that....your spongy ears must have misheard me.
ReplyDeleteSponges don't have ears!
ReplyDeleteok then i change it to "racism was more common in that time period and the fact that Woflshiem is a criminal and a Jew would make Nick feel less guilty/care less about being racist to Jews"...
Ok
ReplyDeleteOnly Jews aren't a race...
Fine. Discrimination.
ReplyDeleteMichelle, thankyou for being frank and telling us about your true views of Nick
ReplyDeletei found this extremely unique, and i think u have unleashed Nick's grandmotherly side...
i like the anti semistic voice u give Nick ('s Granma)
and because this essay really does, just focus on Gatsby and Tom i think it tells us about what really concerns Nick, Maybe it's not politics and society, maybe it is just gossiping and naive thoughts?
haha, grandmotherly.
