Stealing Heaven by Elizabeth Scott

Stealing Heaven was one of those books I bought entirely by mistake. Well, not entirely by mistake because I thought the cover was interesting. Like the girl on the cover was running away from something.

But it turned out preeeeeeetty good.

Eighteen-year-old Danielle, a.k.a. Sydney, Rebecca, Hortense or whatever her mom chooses to call her, has been a thief for all her life. Did you know thieves had their areas of expertise? Well, Danielle/Sydney/Rebecca and her mom's was silver. They would travel cross country if it meant scoring the best silver around. They would strip old maids and widows of their finest silver and sell them at black markets. Because of this, her mother has had to feign relationships with A LOT of men for the past fifteen years to gain knowledge of wealthy houses (and women). Danielle hadn't given much thought into her life until they move to Heaven, a small, summer-house beachfront town. There, she begins to long for something more in her life- something solid, somewhere to call home and heck, maybe even a relationship. But Dani knows the routine- she, like her mom, is expected to have flings with boys around town to gain information, take, and leave.

Only something (well, everything really) goes wrong.

She gains the interest of a teenage local cop and becomes involved with him, going as far as to invite him for dinner. Not only that, but generally doing everything her mother always told her to avoid- revealing her name, befriending the daughter of a wealthy family her mother has her eyes on. And when it comes to actually stealing, Dani and her mom get caught red-handed for the first time and end up in the police station where her soon-to-be cop boyfriend just happens to work in.

The story doesn't end there. Dani's mom had been sick for a few days and while hunting for another house one day collapses on the sidewalk. Her mom is then rushed to the hospital where a doctor comes into her life with a loud 'bang'- and tells her that her mom has lung cancer which had spread to her liver. But with all stories like these, Stealing Heaven ends with a happy ending of Dani rekindling her relationship with Greg the cop.

This book was a light and funny read which satisfied me. Elizabeth Scott is definitely an author to keep an eye out for, what with her witty sense of humor and natural writing which I am sure all of us (at least the girls) can relate to. And it's not just her way of writing that satisfied me- although Dani is placed in an awkward situation none of us can relate to, I ended up doing that anyway. I recommend Stealing Heaven to all (but the four males... except Nick maybe) of the class.
